I'm not sure about running multiple queries, but for the query you mentioned above, you may want to look at whereBetween from the docs at:

http://laravel.com/docs/queries#selects

thanks for reply, well yeah probably for 'between @a and @b ' I can use whereBetween, but what about set @a = 10/2; set @b = 3/2; ?
